New employees can be vulnerable, out of their element, stressed, and eager to please.

Instead of providing a nurturing environment and offering instant validation, however, many businesses expect their new hires to turn into genuine attack dogs in a matter of weeks, providing little training coupled with high expectations.

Given that the newest workforce generation will be in a state of constant flux, providing excellent onboarding is essential for retaining quality employees.

Onboarding, sometimes referred to as organizational socialization, is the process of introducing your employees to the expectations, skills, knowledge, and culture of your company.

The mentor buddy is a proposed plan for the department heads or team leaders to follow up people in their team to assess their work, how they are adjusting to the company and such.

The steps in the mentor buddy program are as follows:

  • TL to choose the appropriate buddy – in this part, the onboarding officer asks the team leaders or the department heads who will be the buddy of the new hire. A buddy is someone who partners with a new employee during his or her first few months of employment. He/she provides insight into the day-to-day activities of the company and is there to help the new employee fit in more quickly. Typically, a buddy would make him- or herself available to show the new hire around the office, go over procedures and policies, and generally help the new hire become familiar with the company's inner workings and culture.

  • Create 8 actions for the chosen buddy to complete the reviews – the onboarding officer then creates 8 actions for the chosen buddy by the TLs and department heads to attach the accomplished buddy checklist every meeting through an action made in Strategy X. This applies for week 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. Indicate name of employee and attached guideline checklist when finishing an action in Strategy X.

  • Create 1 action for employee to complete survey with TL as approver – the onboarding officer creates an action for the new employee to accomplish the buddy survey after the buddy program has ended. The onboarding officer must make him/her attach the accomplished survey form in the action and lets the employee make their TL or department heads as approver of the action.

  • Create 1 action for buddy to complete survey with TL as approver – the onboarding officer creates action for the buddy of the new employee to accomplish the buddy survey after the buddy program has ended. The onboarding officer must see to it that he/she will attach the accomplished survey form in the action and after, the buddy will make their TL or department heads as approver of the action.

  • Upload buddy and employee survey to 201 file – once the buddy survey has been completed via Strategy X during the 12th week, the onboarding officer then downloads and saves the file to the employee’s 201 file.
