Rent can eat up a big chunk of income each month, especially if you’re a pensioner struggling to pay other living costs. Housing Benefit could help you to meet those costs and save you some worry.

Housing Benefit can help pay your rent if you’re on a low income. It can pay for part or all your rent. You can apply whether you’re unemployed or working.

Housing benefit (or housing allowance) is a group of social services whose purpose is to reduce families' housing expenditure (rent, monthly loan repayments). It is granted on a means-testing basis, thus enabling the beneficiaries to reach the minimum level concerned. It is also calculated based on the family's situation, the type of housing and the beneficiary's place of residence.

Housing Benefit is a means-tested benefit. This means the amount you can get depends on:

  • your savings
  • who you live with
  • how much rent you pay
  • how many rooms you have in your home
